If you're looking for a view from the top - well, almost the top - this hotel was the one for you. Check in at the base of the mountain, then take a gondola ride to the hotel. Multiple dining options, very friendly and helpful staff, and a great way to enjoy a ski resort - even it you don't ski. Only a few MINOR downsides - view from the room looks unobstructed on their website, but in reality, if your room is on the front of the building, you are staring straight into a working chairlift... a minor detail unless you are there to sit on your hotel room's balcony to enjoy a view of the mountainside. Also, don't rely on taking great pictures from the gondola. The front window of car we rode in was so filthy you literally could not see anything through it and many of the cars looked like they hadn't been hosed down in years. I imagine it is hard to keep them perfectly clean but these were awful. And a "funny" thing - if you want to hike, they provide free bear spray. We chose to sit, enjoy the cocktails and scenery, and let others hike with the bears :-)

Sunshine lodge saved the trip for me. I made bookings around 3 weeks before my trip due to uncertainty and everything else in banff was $600+ per night. However sunshine lodge came around $400 USD per night. It’s still expensive but totally worth it. It’s a 4 star property located on a mountain. Gondola is included in summers. I visited mid September. They also provided complimentary shuttle when gondola wasn’t running after 6pm. They have hot tub, sauna and an amazing restaurant just outside the lodge. We enjoyed all of that. One thing I noted in check in instructions is the rules are very different in winter. I think Gondola is not included in your stay and you pay extra $125 if you arrive after gondola hrs. and want to utilize shuttle services. So please make sure you know all these aspects. Another thing to notice is that it’s located between banff and lake louise so it’s inside the national park and you need park pass. It’s about 20 mns drive to banff but it’s also convenient when you are traveling on the other side to Icefield parkway, lake louise or Jasper. So I feel it’s more convenient than Canmore. The only complaint I have is that after paying everything in advance, they still charged a $22 resort fee per night. Although it’s not a deal breaker. I still highly recommend this property.

Our stay at the Sunshine Mountain Lodge was amazing. The location is great, both for hanging out there and for heading out to ski or hike. The views are spectacular. The service and food were standard, if not exceptional, but the staff were there to answer questions. I would highly recommend staying and hope to return.

Good hotel in a neat area. It’s a beautiful setting but there are limited amenities when up there.
