Grand old bones, but showing its age. You can tell this was once a gorgeous, opulent hotel. These days it's a bit tired and rundown, though it still has character and a genuinely good location - halfway between the park and plenty of restaurants, with a great little fruit stand/shop right next door (good prices, friendly, handy for snacks). The staff were the highlight. Everyone was very helpful. The room had some quirks. A giant pole right next to the bed blocked one person from reaching the nightstand, and made the AC controls awkward to get to, though once you did, the AC itself worked great. The shower, on the other hand, was busted; the one part that worked sprayed water everywhere. The gym, spa and pool are down in the basement, and they're small, dark and dingy, so we never really wanted to go spend time down there. Breakfast was fine with lots of options. One heads-up: parking is a few blocks away, down a steep hill. Bottom line: a characterful, well-located base with lovely staff, but the rooms and facilities need some love. Fine for a night or two if you set expectations.
