What guests think

At Sonesta Select Charlotte University Research Park, guests praise the convenient location and often friendly staff, but repeatedly note dated interiors, worn hall carpets, occasional odors, and maintenance issues, alongside limited paid breakfast, a daily parking fee, and inconsistent atmosphere.

Rooms are generally comfortable, with some balconies and suites appreciated, though hallway and neighbor noise and patchy Wi‑Fi come up in several reviews. Several guests liked the courtyard, gym, and pool when open, while others faced pool closures or cleanliness issues, broken ice machines, and spotty elevators. Overall, expect basic, well‑located lodging with noticeable trade‑offs in upkeep and amenities.

I had an excellent visit! Such a nice and clean hotel with a beautiful view of the pool and city. The only qualm that our family had was that the pool could be kept open a bit longer than 8pm. Besides this, the gym was the best part; very clean with nice equipment and air conditioning!

This property was very nice, without a doubt. Only complaints i really have are the fact my room (room 332) didn't have hot water when I took a shower, the air conditioner under the window was not adjustable, and the fact you have to pay $5 per day for parking (they take it out of the $100 deposit you make at the front desk). Other than that, it's in a convenient location for those that would be traveling to a concert at the PNC Pavilion.

The hotel room had dead flies and Live flies on the counters and dresser. Then I saw flies groups of live flies on the ceiling. Dead roaches in window the window corners. Ice machine is broken and they had a cooler in lobby for ice but everyone could just put their hand in the cooler to grab ice. I was done and not wanting to stay the night at this hotel. Went to complain and give back keys and In the parking lot by pool is where some were smoking weed.

I stayed at this hotel several years ago and it was great. I decided to give it another try. I'm not sure what happened but it changed. First off the staff was friendly and the room was somewhat clean. Lets start with the smell. The smell of weed hits you in the hall way and when we got to our room the smell of cigarette smoke and weed smacked us in the face when we opened the door. Both nights that we stayed there, the t.v. signal went out like clockwork at the same time each night. The first night it never came back on. The second night I called the front desk and it miraculously came back on. The thermostat is on a motion sensor, which means at night when you need it the most, the air doesn't come on unless something moves around. Most of this I could have overlooked but what set me off was the fact that I paid $15 extra per person per night for a "continental breakfast". When I went down the first morning searching for it, the front desk told me I could pick 3 things off the cart that consisted of wrapped danish, muffins, bagels, some fruit and juice and milk. So I paid $15 for $6 worth of snacks from a convenience store. The second morning we didn't make it down until 10:30 only to be told that it ended at 10:00. Seriously? No one told us an end time and I had a voucher. The snacks are right there behind the desk. Either just say you don't have breakfast so people can make plans or have a REAL breakfast and include it in the price of the room. This was insulting.

From the moment I checked in it started. The person working that night was so engrossed with her phone that she never acknowledged me for a few minutes. I stayed in room 432. Parties going on all floors and the aroma of pot could be smelled everywhere. No ice machines were working. Had to return to lobby to get ice. Two black coolers in front of the counter at Starbucks had ice in them. I had to scoop ice out which was partially melted so it was there for awhile. While walking back to the elevator I was approached by some girls who got on the elevator to go to another floor and room asking me if I wanted to join their partly declined the invite. I have stayed in a Sonasta off of exit 104 in atlanta off interstate 85 many times no problem. I was in Charlotte one night and this was not of Standard for the type of hotel it should have been. I’m disappointed with my stay and another choice will be made next time. Perhaps the Hilton across the street. Mike Breedlove

If “you’re not welcome here” was a person, Chris, the representative at the desk last night, fully embodied hostility. He was rude, he made up rules and extra fees that were not on Hotels.com or the email sent by the hotel after paying for the reservation. It was late or my family and I would’ve found another hotel. Chris was so rude and dismissive, that my child asked why he didn’t like us. He even yelled at us and demanded that we return the luggage cart, (which we intended to do once we finished taking our luggage upstairs.) The room reeked of smoke, the smoke detector was covered with a plastic bag. There were several stains on the furniture, and a broken cabinet. Everything just seem inhospitable. The front desk experience just amplified our displeasure with everything.

Nice experience. There is a sign in the parking lot to make sure your car is clear of any valuables… I'm assuming there's a reason for that. Hotel staff was friendly and helpful when needed. Location is easy to find for someone who is traveling from out of town. After checkout, I kept getting notifications from the hotel chain under the wrong first and last name, though. So that was a bit concerning/strange. I hope Nikki also enjoyed her visit.

The Sonesta Select was nice and clean, and Teri (I think was her name) at the front desk was absolutely super - very friendly and cared about our satisfaction. The only negative was the $18/night additional charge we paid for continental breakfast for 2...strictly pre-packaged Danish, some fruits (apples, bananas), juice/coffee/tea, and I believe oat meal packets and cold cereal that you have to get at the front desk. This is priced ala carte if you don't pre-pay, and not even complimentary coffee or tea in the lobby. We gave up on this and went to the Ihop even tho we pre-purchased. It was pretty picked over by 9 AM, our bad I guess. There are many restaurant options nearby, so thats a plus.

The balcony was subpar. The curtains were stained from water damage( I hope) the couch was stained. The office chair had a burn in the cushion. In addition to that when we called to ask when was breakfast was served; we were advised from 7am-10am. However, when we came down to ask where was the breakfast the desk attendant said they don’t serve breakfast at the “Select “ locations. My asked are you sure to the attendant and she said there is a group that made reservations for breakfast. The website stated there is a continental breakfast with no mention of for a select group. It was also plastered in the elevator that breakfast was available. I have no desire to state at your location again. There was no ice machine on my floor. Please see all pictures included.
