Great breakfast to start the day. Jose is a great server and made the best limon margaritas we had on the trip. Restaurant menu was excellent balance of food we knew and with a Mayan twist. Owner Amy Jo was welcoming and on site to offer suggestions and support for the area. Thank you

Another return visit, and I'd come back a third time without hesitation. If you're exploring Uxmal, the Ruta Puuc, or the broader region, The Pickled Onion is simply the right place to stay. The huts are rustic and charming — simple, colorful, and comfortable with AC and a fridge — exactly what you need after a day of archaeological sites. The pool is a genuine pleasure in the evenings, and the restaurant consistently surprises with inventive offerings that punch well above what you'd expect from a property of this size. The owners clearly want guests to make the most of the area. An introductory note at booking and a well-stocked room binder provide genuinely useful orientation — not boilerplate. One practical note: I messaged twice through Hotels.com and once via their contact form to arrange a guide in advance and received no response. Once on site, they were happy to help immediately. If pre-arrival logistics matter to you, plan to sort them on arrival or find another channel. A wonderful, characterful base for one of the Yucatan's most rewarding stretches of territory.

Just as we remember it but under new ownership. I missed the personalization of the founder Valerie Pickles. She would stop by at breakfast and greet the visitors. I heard the new owner wasn’t feeling well so we didn’t get to meet her. The wonderful included breakfast did not include the signature pickle on the Ham, cheese and egg burrito. Now it was scrambled eggs but just as good. Jamaica juice, some fruit and good strong coffee too! The grounds are lush and so well established. Always a good nights sleep in the thatched roof bungalows! I miss the binder of recommendations that also included history on the place. We miss you Valerie but send good wishes to the new owner. What a gem the Pickled Onion is! We ate dinner there twice- margaritas were a bit sour for my liking, and the empanada appetizer was cold both nights. But the food is good and worth stopping by for!

The staff were very friendly and helpful. In one accomodation the water did not work so the staff gave my sister and her partner another. However in that one the shower hardly provided any water. In our accomodation, the tap in the shower was dripping. There was water and adequate pressure. In both accomodations the small fridges were noisy so we shut them off. The rooms were not as shown on the photos. Instead the decor is shabby. The mosquito netting had holes. The pool was clean as were the loungers surrounding the pool. Two of the umbrellas in the Breakfast area had rods missing so also appeared shabby. The food in the restaurant for dinner was delicious and reasonably priced. The same can be said for the continental breakfast which came with the room..
