Reviews of Esse Athens highlight a central Plaka location, exceptionally friendly staff who go above and beyond, modern rooms (some with Acropolis views and private hot tubs), and a praised breakfast served at a nearby cafe.
Many guests highlighted thoughtful service touches such as early check‑in, luggage help, transfer arrangements, and tailored recommendations. Common drawbacks include compact rooms with limited storage, occasional construction or street noise, shower water spilling onto bathroom floors, and the lack of on-site restaurant or bar. Overall, expect a modern boutique stay with standout service in a prime, walkable area.

My wife and I stayed at Esse hotel in the Plaka neighborhood for 3 days/2nights during the 1st part of our trip to Greece. It is a small hotel with a small lobby and tiny elevator but the service here is tremendous! If you are looking for a boutique hotel experience, this will not disappoint. The room itself is not big but it is well designed with luxurious features and thoughtful touches. Everything worked perfectly from the motorized blinds to excellent hot water and strong water pressure. Our room had a nice private balcony with an adjustable heat hot tub that is kept warm and has terrific view of the Acropolis. The neighborhood is very walkable to nearby attractions and their included breakfast is at an amazing restaurant around the corner. Highly recommend Esse for great accommodations in Athens.

Hotel staff was great. After being on the road for days, we were looking forward to relaxing in our private hot tub. However, upon arrival it was not turned on and was very cold. We called the front desk, they immediately came up and turned it on, advised 30 min approx to warm up. It took several hours. We figured the next day would be good to go, however, housekeeping turned it off, so another evening with no warm hot tub. The next 2 days we left a polite note to please leave hot tub on so we could enjoy it in the evenings. Once we resolved that issue we were good to go. Breakfast was right next door but we were up and gone touring every day before yet opened so cannot vouch for breakfast. We definitely wood recommend this hotel, but if you’re expecting a warm hot tub, make sure to notify them in advance!

Amazing location, clean room, great a/c, great shower. Breakfast is incredible! It starts at 8:00 a.m. and if you need to be out before then they will pack you a box to go. The breakfast goes until 11:00 a.m. which is nice. Elevator. View from my room was of the street.

I highly, highly recommend this hotel! The staff gave us a very good first impression. Mattina met us with a huge warm smile. Andreas and Nick were always welcoming and accommodating. The area is quiet but two short blocks either direction and you are either on your way to the Acropolis or in the middle of souvenir shopping in the Monastiraki square. Syntagma is 10 mins away, and you have rooftops bars within 5 mins walking distance. No need to rent a car. Monastiraki train station is about 10 mins away, Syntagma station about 15 mins. That is if one does not get distracted by the souvernir shops. It’s a boutique hotel so no big lobby and no pool but the whole building is very clean. Housekeeping can clean the room everyday if that’s your choice. Toiletries were more than adequate, I barely had to use the ones I packed. The room on the small side but more than enough for two. The beds were comfortable. They do not have a dining area and breakfast was in a restaurant around the corner, so not a buffet. But the food was healthy, delicious, and the portions were generous. Will definitely stay at Esse Athens the next time we visit.

The Esse has only been open for a couple of weeks and as such does not yet have a restaurant or bar. They still need to do some modifications so the shower doesn’t leak water unto the bathroom floor. The staff was friendly and helpful. The property is well located in the Plaka so there are plenty of shops and restaurants all around. Would definitely stay again.

Reception is very tiny, but the room was well sized for a European room. We had a double on the 3rd floor. Elevator worked. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. Breakfast was at a cafe down the street and was fantastic! We had an early ferry to Hydra one day and we got it to go (yogurt with granola, fruit, breads and jellies). The staff was quick to fix issues (housekeeping forgot to leave towels and we needed safe assistance). They were very friendly and had recommendations ready. The location is really perfect. We walked to everything but the Archaeology Museum. Plenty of restaurants to choose from (try Symposio). A view of the Acropolis from the road in front. City noise level, but not horrible because it’s a small street. I would go back. I wish I had taken pics in the room but they do look like the rendered drawings from the site.

The good: not too far away from everything, about 10 minutes walk to all tourist interests. AC is cold. Shower and sink water flow is very high. Breakfast is as good as any other hotel in southern Europe, which is very high standard. The bad: I upgraded to Apollo room street view. It’s small and in a weird corner location adjacent to the cleaning storage. I suggest you not wasting money or spend more to upgrade to suite. There’s constant construction noise. Morning, afternoon, and night there’s hammering drilling randomly and fire alarm once. if you are a light sleeper, I suggest pass. The property is not well maintained, scratches everywhere. Amenities shows usage. They had to call me once while I was touring the city to enter my room (I had do not disturb on) to fix a water leakage. The Ugly: I haven’t found one clean towel. They all look like someone has wiped their bottom after a dump with. I had to buy a new one, wash it myself and dry it. I am glad there’s a heated drying shelf in the bathroom, although the plug is in a poor location, difficult to plug in, even more to unplug. Overall I would look to stay somewhere else.

This little boutique hotel has been renovated. The rooms are spacious, modernized and super clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The reception area is quite small, but you are not in Athens to hang out at a hotel reception area anyway. The view right outside the hotel is Acropolis. Amazing. This boutique hotel could not be better located. You are at Plaka and the biggest Orthodox Church in Athens. I loved it.

Room was updated but quite small with toilet/sink stall and separate shower stall. Both bathroom and shower felt like they were in the middle of the room. There was limited space to hang clothing and no real closet. There was construction going on next door which was loud during the day. Location was great in terms being close to Acropolis and shopping. The breakfast was excellent! Staff were also helpful and friendly.

The hotel is a cute, boutique style hotel. Nice and clean, hotel staff is extremely nice and helpful. It has amazing views of the Acropolis. The only downside would be the construction next door. It is very loud early in the morning. The showers also splash water out on the floor. I would recommend this hotel as long as the noise doesn’t bother you.

I have never stayed at a property where the staff was so kind and totally focsed on service. From the manager, front desk staff, to housekeeping they are happy to make every effort to make your stay enjoyable. The hotel is new so the signage wasn't up yet but it was still easy to find. It is in pristine condition and the location couldn't be better. It is under 7 minutes walk to the Acropolois, Roman Agora, Hadrians Library, and the Metro. Do yourself a favor and add in the breakfast. Delicious and generous. I highly recommend Esse!

It is in pristine condition and the location couldn't be better. It is under 7 minutes walk to the Acropolois, Roman Agora, Hadrians Library, and the Metro. Do yourself a favor and add in the breakfast. Delicious and generous. I highly recommend Esse!

Esse Athen’s exceeded my expectations. The staff were remarkable and remembered that my trip to Athens was to celebrate my mother's birthday. I even had the opportunity to check in early. The staff were friendly, kind and helpful.

Well located quiet hotel situated in the Plaka area. Beautiful large modern comfortable room with an awesome view. Breakfast is outside of the hotel but literally a 20 second walk away and the breakfasts were excellent with plenty of choice. Staff at the hotel were pleasant and gave us useful information. Would definitely stay there again when we revisit Athens.

I highly recommend this property. It is modern, recently built/renovated with excellent views of the Acropolis and in the heart of the Plaka. Everything is walkable with dozens of little streets full of shopping, bars, cafes, etc. right when you walk out of the door. The staff was lovely as well. If I go back to Athens, this is exactly where I will stay.

Dining
Breakfast at a nearby cafe is frequently described as excellent, generous, and varied, with takeaway options for early departures. A few felt it wasn’t made to order or only average.

Amazing location, clean room, great a/c, great shower. Breakfast is incredible! It starts at 8:00 a.m. and if you need to be out before then they will pack you a box to go. The breakfast goes until 11:00 a.m. which is nice. Elevator. View from my room was of the street.

It was beautiful from the moment we walked in; our room was exquisitely appointed and very new. The people at the front desk couldn’t have been nicer. They went out of their way to help us. The free breakfast was truly a gourmet experience.

My wife and I requested a queen rather than a double and we were told it was subject to availability and to our surprise, we got a king bed in a suite! Our room was fantastic including a bottle of wine in our room upon arrival. The customer service was great and our breakfast was delicious two doors down! We would highly recommend as the location could not have been better near so much in such a great area of Athens!

Such a great little hotel. The staff was super friendly and charming. The rooms were pretty much perfect with really strong air-conditioning and good blackout shades. Also included coffee and plenty of towels and the things you’d expect. Rooms all seem brand new. The breakfast was nothing short of spectacular. What a bargain and a great hotel and the perfect location. Highly recommended.
