What guests think

Across recent reviews for Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Solana Beach-Del Mar by IHG, guests praise the walkable beachside location and friendly staff, while extensive renovations and maintenance issues create mixed experiences, especially around cleanliness and reliability.

Many rooms are newly renovated, with comfortable beds and modern bathrooms, but other areas feel dated and some hallways and carpets are worn or dirty. Construction commonly affects amenities and operations, with recurring reports of elevator outages, closed or messy areas, and occasional Wi‑Fi problems. Breakfast is generally appreciated for variety, though the dining room can be uncomfortably warm and quality is inconsistent at times. The room itself was fine. No WiFi, no exercise room and the ice machine required an elevator and stairs to access the pool area. I book a room for their advertised amenities and they failed to provide internet? $16 a day to park in a garage filled with construction materials, really? Charged full price for everything and IHG failed to provide advertised services. Not happy

The people that work here were absolutely amazing. They went out of their way to help. Unfortunately the hotel was being renovated and it was a total mess. Our carpet was wet the whole entire time. The elevator was broken part of the time. It was just really old and does need updating.

The hotel is in a pristine location -- quiet, easy to access and a short walk to a beautiful beach. The rooms were recently renovated so they're modern and clean, though I wish they had a microwave and a comfortable office chair. They offer fresh cookies at the front desk every afternoon for guests to snack on when they check in, and the employees are always friendly and accommodating. The breakfast is a typical hotel continental breakfast -- nothing special but a convenient way to fuel up for the day. Parking is $16 per day, which cuts into this hotel's overall value, but that's not uncommon for this area. Long story short: if you're visiting the San Diego area to enjoy the ocean, this is a great choice.

Feedback is mixed: renovated rooms can be clean, but many note dirty or worn carpets, lingering odors (mildew/smoke), and occasional pests or wet carpets. Housekeeping of common areas and the breakfast space is inconsistently maintained.

Carpet smelled very bad. Bed head board had hand marks and (most likely body fluids) liquid drops all over it. Elevator was out of service 5 days out of 7 days of stay. When I talked to manager he said ‘’ you chose to stay after the elevator was out’’ as if I can afford booking another room for a week while I paid in full and they held an extra 614$ in addition to full payment of 1300$ . I didn’t get any kind comments such as sorry for the inconvenience from that manager! When I talked to him about my expectiom of a clean room. He said staff cleaned it for you. They did but after I complained. I expect a clean room before I check in.any way they cleaned room but forget to vacuum the sand off the carpet which was there before we checked in. We didn’t go to the beach so the sand was not from us. This was unacceptable for holiday inn which I have been to in other states and had way better experience. Plus AC turns off daily and we come back to a 80 degree temp in room. I am extremely disappointed and I will escalate my concerns soon.

Old, dated, gross hotel, and we were in the RENOVATED part. Not worth the money. Smells like mold. There was food left in the microwave. Furniture and lighting is like 40 years old. This was a super disappointing waste of money.

The carpet throughout property is so dirty and stained that you cannot tell what color it is supposed to be. There were fruit flies in my room, the shower was dirty and my feet stuck to something the first time I used it. In the room for breakfast, the floors are dirty with spilled food. The floors have not been mopped. The carpet needs more than a vacuum and hard floors need mote than a broom.

Unpleasant Stay – Wet Carpet and Mold Smell I booked this hotel through Expedia, and unfortunately, my experience was disappointing. Upon entering the room, I noticed a strong moldy smell, but I didn't think much of it until I took off my shoes and realized the carpet was completely wet. There was no visible leak, but the dampness made the room very uncomfortable. I reported the issue to the front desk, but the staff member told me she couldn’t do anything since I had booked through Expedia. While I understand it was a budget-friendly option, I expected at least a clean and dry room. Unfortunately, I chose not to stay here again. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel unless management addresses these issues.

We’ve always been happy with Holiday Inn. This time was not a good visit. Front desk staff was wonderful. Location was good. Restaurants in walking distance. We've stayed here many (at least 20) times over the years, but the place has been going downhill. On this last visit, their internet was not working. We stayed 2 nights and they never got it working. Not the end of the world, but it was a major inconvenience, and the staff never once asked how they could make it right. They very sneakily mentioned it was out after all the paperwork was done and i had signed off on the room. I had my room keys in hand when the clerk told me it waant working that day. We checked in at 10:30 PM having been on the road, and needed to settle in. On the morning of checkout, the front desk told me I should have found another room that night if I needed internet so bad. Customer service is dead. Its unbelievable that people will take tour money, and not provide the service promised. I was told this property had been sold. It definitely shows. We won't return. Some other hotel more deserving will get our money in Solana beach from now on. Its a shame. But we work too hard for our money to be treated with such rudeness, and apathy.
