At Volcano House, travellers praise the unforgettable location inside Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park with direct caldera views, easy trail access, and a historic lodge atmosphere that feels rustic and unique, especially compelling when Kīlauea is active.
Rooms are generally clean but basic and dated, with small bathrooms, thin walls, and occasional smoke or musty smells; some offer standout crater views, and many note no TVs or elevator. Staff are widely described as friendly and helpful, though a few guests reported slow check-in or curt interactions during busy eruption periods. On-site dining is often praised for quality and breakfast, but menus or buffet can be limited or inconsistent; parking is frequently difficult during eruptions. Expect a memorable, park-lodge stay focused on views and access rather than modern comforts.

This is a beautiful vintage hotel with stunning views of Kilauea Caldera. It has an outside balcony and inside viewing area. The staff is friendly and helpful. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Restaurants are excellent. The Rim also has wonderful views. All of this is with the National Park and close to all the activities. This is our 2nd stay and we would definitely visit again. Only downside is parking has been difficult with all the volcanic activity and construction.

If you are looking for an unique experience then the Volcano House is a great stay. The staff is welcoming, great dining options, and the volcano views are amazing. The hotel is a historic building so keep that in mind. The rooms are clean, but not very sound proof. You will hear noise. But it offers such an unique opportunity to stay overnight on a volcano. The views of the volcano at sunrise are gorgeous. Also, they have a wood burning fireplace that is lit 24 hours a day in the lobby. You will smell it in your room. But it makes you feel like you are at a campfire. The staff is very friendly and helpful.

Great location to see the eruption of the volcano when we arrived. Cons- finding parking wasn’t easy - so many people here to see volcano that were not staying at the property. They should have reserved spots for people staying here. Also only 1 person to check people in so that was kind of slow. Rooms were good for national park And had places to watch the volcano inside building and outside

The views were amazing. The hotel was like stepping back in time and was very quaint. Two gift shops offered plenty of volcano-themed souvenirs. The restaurant served an amazingly fresh and delicious buffet breakfast, which we enjoyed while watching the volcano. The omelet chef prepared delicious eggs of your choice right before our eyes. The rooms could use a bit of updating, but they were still lovely!

The parking was absolutely terrible. I don’t know if renovations are being done for that or not, but they should. Best location to watch Pele erupt Just some notables, no elevator for second floor, no TV’s. We didn’t care about TV’s but maybe someone with kids would.

The view here is unmatched. The location is wonderful. The property could use some updating. The carpet was worn. The furniture was chipped and scuffed. There were no parking spaces upon check in. It looked like they could use some additional hands to support the operation.

Volcano House, located in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, is a hotel with a restaurant, a walk-in gift shop, historical displays, and a breath-taking view of Kīauea, an active shield volcano, right from the windows. You are also able to walk outside to look at the volcano, as well as exploring other areas of the national park, such as the Sulphur Banks/Steam vents trail, and many others. Even though we only stayed for a day, the overall conditon of the hotel is relatively clean and well-managed. The staff were polite and kind. The rooms provide accomodations for those who struggle to sleep at night. There was little light pollution, making it easy to stargaze right outside the hotel. We were able to explore most of the overlooks and trails we wanted to see since the hotel is walkable, making these areas easy to access. Overall, I recommend staying at Volcano House if you are planning to spend a day at the national park, even if it's just for one night.

Rooms are in need of improvement. They are dirty and outdated. Food service good but prices to high for what you get. Need tv in room. A table in room would be great if no tv so you could play cards etc. a comfortable chair would be highly recommended. As a travel agent I would not recommend it to my customers because they would only be upset as we were.

We stayed for one night in this historic hotel on the rim of the Kilauea volcano. The building is quite old, and it shows. The entire structure has a smokey, gross, mildewy smell to it. The carpet is gross and the walls and doors have not been cleaned of dirt, grime, and hand prints in a long time. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. For the experience of seeing the volcano's glow at night, it was worth staying for one night but I wouldn't go back again.

I asked one of the staff members for a plastic cup. She was quite rude and told me I was not allowed to walk around in the property. Really… A plastic cup. The hot water was not existent and warm at best. There were dirty dishes left in front of our window. We let the front desk know, but they were never removed. For $400 a night I would expect better.

Wonderful! Perfect location to stay for volcanoes NP. Didn't think we would catch an eruption but so thankful a staff member went down the hallway at 5AM loudly declaring "we have an eruption!!!!" So we got up and caught the eruption in the predawn hours in the dark which was AMAZING, as this episode was done before night fell. Tiny rooms but nice big closet to store stuff. Tiny bathrooms, tiny everything, dated rooms, but clean and neat and simple, perfect for walking 20 steps out to the back to see the volcano eruption!

Conveniently located inside the national park. Hiking trails along the rim are literally steps away from the inn. Was fortunate to be able to watch the Kīlauea eruption from the inn. Can’t get any better. The staffs were very friendly and helpful. Rooms were comfortable and as good as one can expect from a place over 170 years old. Best part is there was no television as one should be outdoors enjoying nature and the night skies.

The first night we stayed was miserable—the walls were thin and the sound just traveled through them. The lodge was replacing the floor in the restaurant which was right next door. Furthermore, they were playing music which sounded so loud to me. My husband slept in the car because it was quieter and I went out to the front desk and refused to pay for the night. The second night was much, much better.

Volcano House has rustic charm with an unbeatable view of the volcano caldera. Staff welcome you with a mimosa and cookie. You can sip hot chocolate beside the fireplace or eat a delicious breakfast while watching the lava flow. Truly memorable experience!

We had a very pleasant stay at Volcano House. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the atmosphere felt welcoming. The reception staff went out of their way to be helpful, and all the staff we encountered were polite and friendly throughout our visit. A lovely experience overall!

Location
Inside the national park with direct caldera views and trails steps away; excellent for seeing eruptions at night. Crowds during eruptions can make access and parking harder.

The location of this hotel is unbeatable. The volcano crater is right at the back of the hotel. And it's one of the best spot to view the crater. You can view it from the lobby and dining room, or walk out for a more open view. One thing that makes staying here really great is that: you could only see the red lava when it's dark (and cold). So ppl stay late or come in really early to watch the sun rise. Staying here makes everything convenient. The food in the restaurant was actually not bad and reasonably priced given the location and view. (a delightful surprise). Breakfast was more pleasant since it was mostly the hotel guests so not crowded. Hotel facilities were old. But I didn't have high expectation so wasn't too disappointed. Staff were nice and always trying to help. The rooms have baseboard heating. Water was not hot enough for shower at 8. It got warmer at 10. That's the only critical complaint we had.

We were not sure what to expect, but it was great. The view from the room of the volcano was amazing and with no TVs as a distraction you could really focus on the beauty of Hawaii. The restaurant there was excellent for dinner and my family enjoyed the breakfast buffet as well. you could walk out the back of the hotel directly onto a trail that would allow you to hike most of Volcano National Park. If we make it back to the Big Island again we will be sure to stay here again.

Great location inside the park overlooking the rim of volcano crater. Friendly helpful staff. Good breakfast buffet. Room needs updating...single pane old wooden windows from the 1950s, no TV, no mini-fridge. Dining room menu very limited for dinner (only 5 entrees).

Volcano house was very comfortable old lodge style hotel. Beds were comfy. We did need to ask for additional towels, glasses, coffee mugs & coffee since there were 3 of us on reservation but room only was equipped for two. Had a wonderful dinner in their restaurant but morning brunch was terrible. Not much to choose from and several items were cold. We did enjoy our stay. The view is fantastic!!
