What guests think

The Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Carlsbad Beach by IHG draws praise for its friendly staff and value, but several reviews note dated rooms alongside recurring issues like musty odors, visible wear, and spotty Wi-Fi.

Guests like the breakfast selection and convenient access to the beach, Legoland, and the freeway, though a daily parking fee is frequently disliked. Cleanliness feedback is mixed, with both very clean stays and reports of stained carpets, mildew, pests, or lingering smells; age shows in furnishings, bathrooms, and elevators. Expect a budget-minded stay with solid basics but uneven upkeep.

Entrance was being pressure washed when we arrived. Floor wet and wet floor signs. No hot water in lobby for tea. Not sure if there’s suppose to be coffee 24/7 but there wasn’t. TV in room didn’t work and tech was sent to room too approx an hour for them to fix the problem. Then realized for 3 people we had 1 towel. Pool looked to dirty to use.

Check in was fast. I stood at the reception area for awhile before being helped by a heavy set lady at check in. She was not personable or approachable but rather more dismissive almost like you’re being an inconvenience to her. Never made eye contact with me. Asked her if the pool was heated she said yes, even though it was not…I also asked her if there were towels available she said there should be, and throughout this whole interaction with her there was no acknowledgment or eye contact from this lady. When we got to the pool there were no towels available like she said there was. Had to go back to the front desk to request for some. Our first room reeked of something very foul and disturbing. Called the front desk/guest services for another room which a gentleman in the front was able to accommodate with no issues. He was very friendly and accommodating. The second room had a similar smell I’m guessing because it was on the same floor and may have been just a plumbing issue. Overall our stay wasn’t terrible but not the greatest either and the hotel itself is very outdated even the elevators were struggling at every use.

The hotel location is great, cleanliness and customer service are good. The only thing I disliked was the fact that you have to pay for parking $12 and added fee, I would accept this charge if the parking was gated but it is not, so I don't understand why the charge, plus when I booked through Expedia the price did not include the parking fee

Everyone we encountered was friendly and helpful. Had an important meeting and asked for a room with ethernet connection. Was conveniently located near the freeway and one of our destinations: Legoland.

Do not stay here. It’s right off the freeway and the road noise is so loud. Then you have the AC & refrigerator noise competing to see which can be the loudest. The beds are so hard and not comfortable & last but not least, the sofa bed is held up by springs with sheet thin mattress. It literally feel and sounds like you are sleeping on springs. It was a horrible experience and the worst $200 I’ve ever spent.

Wendy at the front desk was very nice. But the restroom had a sewer like smell that wasnt very pleasant. Then the janitor lady barged into the room despite me yelling "we\'re still in here". Then she proceeds to still open the door and tell me that we already had checked out. Which we in fact did not and she felt the need to try and argue about it. It was around 9:50 so we still had an hour till check out.

We always enjoyed our stay at Holiday Inn, but this time it was disappointing…. The receptionist lady was super friendly and professional, smiling at all times, but the front desk was understaffed. There were 3 people in front of us, and the entire check-in process took ~50 minutes, most of which was wait time because she was also the only person who had to answer all the phone calls. When she helped us, she had to answer 6 calls. No towels at the poolside, which was totally fine if the front desk was properly staffed, we checked twice, but there were about 8, 9 people in line each time. We felt so bad for the receptionist lady; she didn’t get to take any break during those hours. We ended up using our room’s bath towels. The shower stall sliding doors in our room did not really slide, which seemed to be quite flimsy and could not be closed completely; the water would splash on the floor. There were some hairs on the bathroom floor and on the towel when we arrived.

The location of this property is off the Poinsettia Lane exit in South Carlsbad, CA, and serves travelers as an excellent and strategic base when visiting the area. It is a short block to the ocean, and permits a visitor to turn right toward Carlsbad Village on which one can use a wide “boardwalk” to walk above the beach or to drop down into the Village to find a restaurant or shop. Or, a visitor can turn left and drive into Leucadia to have lunch or dinner or to stroll or head down to the beach. Great location so close to the water.

This was a great location. Close to Legoland. I do suggest renting a car like we did. Pool was nice, with a hot tub. Needs are a bit hard, but slept well anyways. Disappointed they didn't have beach towels that were listed on the website, but was offered bath towels instead which worked fine. The breakfast had lots of choices with hot food and cold foods. Would recommend to anyone.
